CHAPTER 11

I followed Carl over to the apartment building where the mysterious deaths had taken place. Crestview Manor was the most uninspiring apartment complex I had ever seen. The drab brick building seemed like it hadn’t been maintained very well in the previous few years—or decades.

I parked next to Carl’s Mercedes in the potholed lot and got Romeo out of the car, holding him under my arm as my friend got out of his vehicle. Carl led me slowly to the apartment on the second floor, as if we were in no hurry. Or perhaps he was apprehensive?

Inside the dimly lit lobby, we made our way up a stairwell to the second floor. The hallway didn’t offer much natural light, and it was illuminated by low-watt incandescent bulbs spread out along the corridor. For a moment, I felt like I was in some sort of horror movie or supernatural thriller. A lightbulb near the end of the hall flickered once, and my heart rate increased slightly. Goosebumps sprouted on the back of my neck as I gripped Romeo closer to my chest.

Maybe my friend was right and there was something truly wrong with this building…

I swallowed hard and continued along the hallway. Of course, I was interested to see the apartment in which the landlady’s former lovers had both passed; however, I couldn’t wait to leave this place. It gave me the creeps.

“Okay, here it is,” Carl said, grimacing. “Are you sure you want to look at this apartment. I mean, it’s above your budget and with its history⁠—”

“If you don’t want to go inside, you don’t have to,” I said.

“Oh, no,” Carl said, trying his best to maintain his composure. But I knew on the inside he was a little freaked out about being here.

And to be honest, so was I.

Carl unlocked the door and led us into the apartment. The place was large and featured an open floor plan. A decent amount of natural sunlight poured in through the sliding glass door and several large windows on the opposite side of the room, reflecting off the freshly painted white walls and ceiling. The entire place featured laminate flooring, which was a dark oak color and contrasted the walls nicely.

From the outside, the building looked run-down and dumpy. But this apartment was…nice.

I walked toward the sliding glass door, hearing my footfalls echo in the large space. I peered out at the balcony and was surprised to see that the view was actually quite serene. The edge of a wooded property nearly reached the building, allowing for a tranquil view of the wilderness. This was an area in Willow Creek where a lot of people hiked and enjoyed the outdoors. Living here, I’d be within a stone’s throw of a beautiful wooded trail.

Off to the right of the dining area, an island separated the kitchen which featured granite countertops and a stainless steel refrigerator, gas range, microwave, and dishwasher. In some apartments I had seen, they only had a range installed.
